What is a board-certified specialist?
A board-certified specialist is a veterinarian that has achieved a high level of expertise within a particular specialty. Following veterinary school, a specialist must complete several additional years of advanced clinical training including a one-year rotating internship and a three-year residency. Specialists must complete a rigorous credentialing process, including publishing in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and passing examinations administered by an accredited specialty college (such as the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, etc). They are then referred to as a “Diplomate” of that specialty.
This distinction reflects a veterinarian’s depth of knowledge, technical proficiency, and commitment to excellence in their chosen discipline. At our hospital, board-certified specialists play an integral role in managing complex medical and surgical cases, working collaboratively with referring primary care veterinarians to deliver expert, evidence-based care.
A veterinary specialist cannot and should not replace your primary care veterinarian, who is an essential part of your pet’s healthcare team. Just like in human medicine, your primary care doctor may refer you to a specialist for certain expertise and advanced care. We partner with your primary care veterinarian and provide updates every step of the way.
